Elections are always fascinating. Candidates try hard to woo voters by emphasising why they will be worthy of a vote.
I thought I would concentrate on my 4 Henderson Ward Council representatives who are all candidates in the Auckland Council elections and see what they offered the voters 3 years ago and what they delivered.
It is important to remember that it is Councillors who make policy for the Council and not Council Officers. It is therefore vital to remember that they are the people who have decided what activities should be undertaken and how those activities should be funded.

“I AM AGAINST GST ON RATES, PARKING METERS IN HENDERSON, ANY BUILDINGS ON THE HARBOUR VIEW PARK
I WOULD LIKE TO SEE A CAP ON RATES AND WATER RISES
I WOULD LIKE TO SEE MORE LOCAL INDUSTRY AND JOBS
I feel strongly that we need to get some responsible spending back into council. My independence is important, as I believe there is no room for party politics in Council.
My father Tom, was a councillor and I feel that my business experience would help balance decisions on council spending, as we already have enough city debt. As your representative, I would strive to make Waitakere a better place.
Married with two teenage children, I am owner/operator of a family printing business in New Lynn for over 30 years. I am past Chairman and current Trustee of the Rutherford College Board for the last seven years, and Deputy Chairman of the Waitakere Tag Out Graffiti Trust for eight years.
I offer my experience, with a common sense approach to council affairs on your behalf and ask that you consider supporting me for Council and the Waitakere Licensing Trust.”
In the last three years rates have been raised above the inflation rate on each successive occasion and approved debt has risen from $466m to $635m – a staggering 36% increase!
I feel let down by my 4 ward “representatives” and certainly won’t be voting for any of them in the forthcoming Council elections.
